The Dead Lands Final

It’s a good thing I took my time with The Dead Lands, although I can easily picture devouring it in an all-night reading frenzy. Once sated, I would lick my greedy chops; gazing at the remains of the feast laid before my dark imagination like a bloody sacrifice…

Resolved: 15 Good Writing Habits to Pick Up in 2015

by Jess Alter

I’m not a New Year’s resolutions kind of person. I used to be one: I always resolved to lose weight or complete tasks or learn new skills. I rarely held firm to my resolutions, so I gave up making resolutions. This year, however, I decided to make New Year’s resolutions. All are changes or continuing commitments I can make to grow my writing career.

This year, I published Solaray Dawn, the third installment of the Dome Trilogy. I started preparing a new series I started working on in 2009, the Cryptid Series, for publication in 2015. I began to engage with readers, authors, and publishing industry people on social media, and I realized that business as usual impedes my writing career.

When I reviewed 2014, I saw strengths and successes; I saw weaknesses and failures. Most important, I saw opportunities to improve and evolve as an author throughout 2015.

Season 2, Episode 4

 Kymberlyn Reed

Author of LGBTQ, BDSM, & Vampire Erotica

About as non-traditional as they come, Kymberlyn “Kym” Reed needs reminding that she’s an author – especially since she’s mainly known for working behind-the-scenes as an editor; and for devouring diverse books into the wee hours of the morn like a vampire feasting on mortal blood.

Treasure Hunt Giveaway Concept

Happy Holidays to all – especially to the people who brighten my day just by existing. I’ve met some amazing new authors since revitalizing my writing career in December of 2013. Not only are they talented, but I enjoy interacting with them. In order to show my deep appreciation for my colleagues, I thought it appropriate to showcase their storytelling abilities by hosting an eBook giveaway featuring their word art.

Note: I wrote “The 12 Worst Gifts I’ve Ever Received” as a guest post for awesome LGBT writer Autumn Breeze‘s blog. The 12 Worst Gifts I’ve Ever Received

Don’t get me wrong. When it comes to gift-giving, the gesture is what counts the most. Really. I’m not one of those brand-name-loving chicks who eye-f**ks every pair of Jimmy Choo’s from the other side of the department store window. However, a word to the wise: when it comes time to check me off your holiday gift recipient list, it’s best to save your money. Shower me with meaningful words of love and devotion; or better yet, support my efforts at indie author-hood by buying one of my books, rather than wasting your hard-earned dollars on something I passionately loathe receiving.

“Looking in those dead grey eyes, Thurstan knew the man was Death made flesh.”

A.S.Washington

insurrection

Plot Summary

In fantasy short story An Insurrection (A Sword and Shield Short Book 1), assassin-for-hire Desh leads a rebellion against Thurstan the Mighty so that the king might answer for his crimes. Though righteousness has forced Desh to experience a potential change of heart, his past is not far behind him; waiting to ensnare him in its powerful clutches.

A. S. Washington’s An Insurrection is not the kind of tale you want to start when you don’t have time to finish it. I only had a few minutes to kill the first time I picked it up, and I ended up late to my appointment because I literally couldn’t stop reading it. Was Desh going to kill the king? Would Thurstan actually fight his own battle? Would Morn Shademaker ever stop being so f**king badass?

Thanks for making me tardy for my doctor’s visit, Washington. Your pretty words were like tempting baubles for my greedy inner reader – I simply could not resist this short story’s gritty allure.

“Her breath came in quick, ragged gasps as panic nibbled away at her thoughts.”

assassin

Plot Summary

On her way home from her volunteer shift at the local soup kitchen, Cerena can’t shake the feeling that someone with sinister intentions is stalking her. Are the footfalls she hears behind her a mere figment of her imagination? Unfortunately, what lovely Cerena doesn’t know is that not all of her enemies are strangers…

The Assassin’s Remorse, the debut short story from fantasy author JMD Reid (who moonlights as erotica author Reed James) is an absorbing, quick read. Both accessible for fantasy fans and those new to the genre, this tale of murder, greed, and redemption offers a tasty morsel of the author’s talent.

“Curled against the side of the train, the young girl looked at him with eyes sunken by death.”

DominioDellaMorte_ebook_Final

Dylan J. Morgan‘s a damn good writer. Of the indie authors I’ve discovered this year, he ranks in the top 3, and he’s definitely my new favorite horror novelist. I had the privilege of interviewing him for my Author Spotlight about his recent release, post-apocalyptic hybrid scifi-slash-horror novel The Dead Lands. After reading a sample of his work, I was sold on the quality of his writing.

Dominio della Morte (translation: “Death’s Domain”) is a pitch-dark collection of horror shorts that did not disappoint. I cannot repeat myself enough – this author is seriously talented. His voice is unique and identifiable in the huge mass of indie authors who overpopulate the internet. I have high hopes for his career longevity, as he effectively mixes old school scares with modern situations, and provides unique twists on classic tales. His creations are innovative and entertaining; the imagery he employs is really top-notch. His writing style is descriptive without being over-the-top (though his characters do vomit an awful lot). I especially enjoyed his believable characters and the familiar, yet creative, situations he placed them in (the werewolves stalking your remote family cabin, the husband who wouldn’t stay dead, the father forced to kill his zombie-fied family).

So wind ’em up and watch ’em go…and don’t be surprised if you come away from the experience delightfully scarred in the process.
